Dr. Young is a Diagnostic Expert in the Respiratory team within the Precision Medicine and Biosamples Department at AstraZeneca in Cambridge. The Department has launched 18 diagnostics to accompany AstraZeneca products, including one for inflammatory disease. The vision of the Respiratory team is to make AstraZeneca the leading respiratory personalised healthcare pharmaceutical company by developing diagnostics which identify patients most likely to respond to therapeutic treatment. Simon developed a global prospective testing program for an oncology drug that is now in Phase 3, and is working on a respiratory point-of-care diagnostic. Simon has worked in many sectors of AstraZeneca R&D including imaging and preclinical respiratory development. Prior to joining AstraZeneca, Dr. Young was a Senior Principal Scientist at the Schering-Plough Research Institute (now Merck) in Kenilworth, NJ, USA. He joined Schering-Plough from Canada where he worked as Assistant Professor at the University of Guelph. Dr. Young graduated from the University of Cambridge with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Veterinary Medicine, and also received his PhD in Equine Respiratory Mechanics from the University of Cambridge. He has published 64 peer-reviewed scientific articles and one book.
